YURI' S NIGHT

12 April 2010
Illustri Colleghi e Poeti:

è l'atto più vicina a Dio e all'infinito.

Distinguished Colleagues and Poets:
It’s an honor and pleasure to celebrate the literary event Da Firenze Alle Stelle sponsored by the honorable Mr. Riccardo Nencini on behalf of the regional council of Tuscany to present the distinguished works of Florentine poets: Lilly Brogi, Duccia Camiciotti and Father Fausto Sbaffoni.
Today this gathering joins international celebrations around the world, including Antartica and even in Space on the International Space Station as Da Firenze Alle Stelle takes its place in the global commemoration of Yuri’s Night.
Yuri’s Night is an annual celebration every April 12. On this day, in 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human being in space.
Forty nine years ago, the 27-year-old Russian cosmonaut went, alone, to space. His were the first human eyes to directly witness our Earth from space. He orbited the Earth once. Perhaps his spontaneous exclamation was the first poetry spoken in space. He exclaimed:
“I see Earth! It is so beautiful!”
Poetry, I recognize, is the spirit of Florence. The etymological root of the word, the greek root Poien, means “to make”, “to create”. And creation from nothing, out of nothing, comes from the soul.
The act of Poetry is the most elemental quintessence of a human being.
Above all, and beyond the implementation of mechanics, creation is an act of the soul. Ex Nihilo, out of nothing, from the soul, is the act closest to God and infinity.
Florence is a city which has a soul, a soul that is comprised of the many creators who lived and worked here, as well as those who love and understand it. The Renaissance was a paradigm of innovations, contributions and influence, opening minds to politics, literature, philosophy, and science.
From this city, Dante Alighieri admonished, “Heaven wheels above you, displaying to you her eternal glories, and still your eyes are on the ground”.
From this city, Leonardo da Vinci, whose birth is April 15, three days from today, bought caged birds in the market and set them free to observe their wings, and built the first flying machine. He wrote: "When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return." And his words would become a hymn of evolution. Humanity did turn its eyes skyward, and that longing gave birth to invention and innovation … the birth out of nothing, out of human spirit and ingenuity that innovates solutions to overcome the obstacles to our most noble dreams, those that are worthy of civilization and the true heart of human being.
Did Leonardo da Vinco fathom that 3 days short of exactly 509 years after his birth, a human being would fly so high as to see our blue planet, and tell us it was blue, as Yuri Gagarin did on April 12, 1961?
From this city, Galileo Galilei pointed the telescope up and gave us among so much, the moons of Jupiter, and three epic, historic words, themselves a poem that married Poetry and Science: ”Eppur si muove.”
I send my deepest admiration, congratulations and respect to Professor Carmelina Rotundo, to the Poets Lilly Brogi, Duccia Camiciotti and Father Fausto Sbaffoni. My regards to poets Anna Balsamo, Lia Bronze and Anita Tosi, the actors Allessandro Benocci and Marco Conte, to all here, and to Attorney Pasquale De Luca, who presents a new treasure by Michelangelo Buonarotti.
I venerate Michelangelo’s work with Florence itself, as iconic monuments of the human spirit. Michelangelo’s massive blocks of marble transition from rough rock to hard chisel marks, where single strikes by the sculptor’s chisel indent the stone -- isolated marks as evidence that a human being, a human hand hammered the chisel that arrived to create sublime, almost divine human form in stone. The figure is in the marble but also escapes as it is sculpted free, and the stone nearly breathes.
That is the power of human life. With hammered blows, one after the other, that sometimes seem simple or insignificant, we free ourselves from limits, both internal and external, to arrive to the divine. That is the power of Poets and of innovation. That is the power that Florence embodies and represents. That is your power, dear Poets. I celebrate with you and all pioneers of exploration. Creation and courage go hand in hand.
I join you in this celebration of inspiration and creativity, and the celebration of our world’s beauty, including the undiscovered wonders that await us. I am here with you in spirit and in solidarity, celebrating your wings and the wings you give the world, and the beauty of our world. That numinous power has truly taken us from Florence to the Stars!
To this occasion, I dedicate my poem “Conception.” Thank you with a love and esteem from Florence to the stars.
