Celebrating 100 Years of SEB INTRODUCTION In 1966, Michael Alfred Sleigh and James Frederick Sutcliffe, two former members of the SEB Council, compiled a booklet titled "The Origins and History of the Society for Experimental Biology." This historical document shed light on the early days of the SEB. The booklet's significance was further underscored in 1974 when it was revisited and reprinted during the Fiftieth Anniversary Meeting, thanks to the support of the Company of Biologists. Today, as we celebrate the SEB's centenary, we take you on a journey through an updated history. Over the past three years, our Outreach, Education, and Diversity Manager (Rebecca Ellerington) and Outreach and Engagement Officer (Ana Caroline Colombo) delved into digital records, physical archives, academic papers, and insightful interviews. This booklet combines the SEB's early origins with the subsequent five decades of progress. Within these pages, you'll revisit the wisdom of Alan William Greenwood, whose notes provide a glimpse into the early days of the Society. A. Punt (full name unknown), the Zoological Representative in the Netherlands, shares insights into the origins of the SEB's first international meeting. We also include a recent interview with M.A. Sleigh, offering his reflections on his career and his decades with the SEB. 2 This booklet presents timelines, anecdotes, and key moments that have shaped the SEB over the past century. It's a journey through a century of scientific discovery, marking the SEB's past and its promising future. A photograph from the achieves of A. W. Greenwood. This photo was taken on the roof of the chemistry department at Kings College London on the 30th May 1925 during the 4th SEB meeting. It is the earliest photographic recording of an SEB meeting. 3 A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT I am delighted and honoured to serve as the current president of the SEB especially during our centenary year. This booklet offers a compelling journey through the history of the SEB, spanning from its inception in 1923, to our extraordinary growth and transformation into the organization we are today. It serves as a remarkable means to commemorate the achievements and evolution of the SEB, and I have found it a real pleasure delving into the foundation upon which our organization has flourished. As we approach the conclusion of our centenary year and the culmination of our celebratory events, it presents an invaluable opportunity to reflect on the activities of the past 12 months. This year has truly been a year of jubilation, marked by meticulously planned events that have made it an un
unforgettable and exceptional year. Throughout our centenary celebration, we introduced various initiatives that made a significant impact. One such initiative was the Centenary Mentoring Scheme, which facilitated connections between members at different stages of their careers, offering valuable support and guidance for both mentees and mentors. This collaborative approach helped individuals navigate their career paths and pursue their research ambitions. Our commitment to celebrating our centenary extended worldwide, with the SEB Birthday Fund Grants supporting ten events across the globe, enabling local celebration events in various regions. Our "Careers and Coffee Webinar Series" witnessed remarkable success, with over 100 participants from around the world joining our kick-off event, featuring our very own Managing Editor, Mike Page. Additionally, we launched the "Leaders of the 4 Future Webinars," where we had the privilege of catching up with past SEB award winners to gain insight into their career journeys and evolving research interests. In case you missed these webinars, you can still access them at www.sebiology.org/centenary/leaders-of-the-future.html.
As part of our centenary activities, the SEB staff delved into our archives, to provide a rich overview of the past 100 years of SEB history. This content is available on our website in the form of videos, text, and archival material, whilst a special birthday card encouraged colleagues to share their SEB memories. It was this hard work that resulted in the production of this centenary booklet, ensuring that we preserve the historic records and archives of our organisation for generations to come. Special thanks goes to Dr Rebecca Ellerington and Dr Ana Caroline Colombo for their invaluable contributions.
A true highlight of the year was undoubtedly the Centenary Annual Meeting, where we celebrated a century of achievements in experimental biology and set our sights on shaping the future for the next hundred years. We had an exciting scientific programme with numerous sessions (27) across the three sections (Animal, Cell and Plant) of our biological sciences remit. As part of our celebrations, we had the honour of welcoming Prof Sir Paul Nurse, who delivered the President's Centenary Lecture. We also had the traditional distinguished Plenary Lectures, which were delivered by outstanding scientists who have made exceptional contributions to their respective fields of research and our President's Medal awards, acknowledging and rewarding young scientists of remarkable merit. As part of our Centenary Meeting, we organized several engaging social events,
