TURNER A GREAT
Turner "the genius who measured the mood of Nature" as Ruskin said
J.M.W. TURNER, , born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London (April 1775)
His father had a barber shop and was also a wing maker, his mother, Mary, came from a family of butchers.
His young sister, Mary Ann, died aged four in August 1783; after this event, his mother Mary got seriously depressed.
The young Turner, was sent to live with his uncle Joseph in Brentford, a small town west of London.
His father William, helped him greatly showing his paintings in his barber shop.
In 1789, Turner entered The Royal Academy of Art Schools, when he was only 14 years old.
In 1796, Turner exhibited his first oil painting in the Royal Academy of Arts: “Fisherman at sea”. For his entire life, he exhibited his art-works in the Royal Academy.
Turner was an artist who searched a dialogue with people. His paintings of events are famous, and he is one of the most important landscape painters.
He used different techniques: oil painting, pencil sketches as a base for later paintings, water colours and engraving.
He expressed his deep faith in his last words “The Sun is God”, that he had so deeply
observed, many times, in nature : in a sunny day or during a storm, as expression of the wisdom of God.
When he died, he left a fortune to help and support poor artists and also to the Royal Academy for a foundation on his name to support talented (o 'gifted') students.
Turner is buried in St.Paul’s Cathedral in 1851.
