THÈ FLYING APOSTROPHE Dear Cambridge <« (Questa lettera diretta alla città di Cambridge vuole essere insieme ringraziamento e testimonianza di un'avventura umana, culturale, artistica, didattica, più che meravigliosa, straordinaria) Carmelina Rotundo Abbiamo avuto in dono giorni intensi pieni di felicità, di calore e di colore, spronati dal comune desiderio di migliorare la conoscenza della lingua ed insieme della cultura e della civiltà della Gran Bretagna, condividendo idee, progetti, conoscenze, sentimenti. Noi undici insieme, tenendoci per mano dimenticando fretta e tristezza, seguendo la nostra buona stella: l'AMICIZIA Le maestose vetrate multicolori, che raccontano storie del vecchio e nuovo testamento nella King 's College Chapel calanutano ogni più piccolo raggio di sole che vezzoso brilla nel cielo turchino di questa scintillante mattinata di luglio, illuminando (come riflettori sulla scena) le immagini della fantastica Cambridge in cui abbiamo vissuto quattordici notti e quattordici giorni. L'Adorazione dei Magi, dono regale di Rubens, ci appare in tutta la sua bellezza e sontuosità - ricordando che ognuno è alla ricerca della luce e della verità sempre per tutta la vita. I ventagli architettonici che sorreggono gli altissimi soffitti della King's College Chapel stanno calamitando il mio sguardo dando respiro all'anima che libera si alza in volo verso i ricordi che riscaldano il cuore col calore della gioia per avere avuto in dono la possibilità di essere parte di questa intensa esperienza umana, culturale, artistica e didattica insieme. Leggerezza ed imponenza si bilanciano negli edifici di Cambridge, nelle dimore dove si svolge la vita quotidiana, nei negozi, come nei trentuno storici colleges, nei musei. A questi ricami sulle mura di Cambridge sui suoi tetti mi ubriaco di bellezza, così nei suoi giardini dove è piacevole ritornare e guardare la storia passata e progettare il futuro. Per tè, con tè, Cambridge, ci siamo sentiti una cosa sola, godendo del grande valore dell'amicizia che a nessuna moneta terrena è dato comprare. Abbiamo anche avuto la buona sorte di aprire una nuova era nel mondo degli studi della Beli, di essere "Thè pioneers of this kind of independent teachers' course", un corso ideato da Rosemary Wilson (head of Beli Teacher Training) e tenuto da Eryl Griffiths e Katie Head, dove alla ormai collaudata ed alta professionalità della Beli Language Schoois si sono unite la possibilità di studiare a Peterhouse, il College più antico fondato nel 1264 con una 'accommodation' ideale, non solo vicino a Peterhouse, ma anche dentro, nel cuore di Cambridge, con in più l'apertura di ogni facilitazione allIJniversity Centre (pasti buoni, con varietà di scelta ed a buon prezzo, accesso alle sale lettura, video, computer, al cafè). |

Una combinazione davvero unica che ha permesso al gruppo di vivere uniti ed essere parte della fantastica Cambridge, dove l'equilibrio tra le due forze opposte è una costante della vita, come delle cose. Per navigare sul fiume Cam, lo chaffeur deve bilanciare le forze per piantare sul fondo delle acqms il lungo palo di legno con la leggerezza del suo corpo eretto sull'imbarcazione stessa. Così navigando, baciati dal sole, sul Cam abbiamo avvertito l'abbraccio delle tue sponde, ascoltando la voce dello chaffeur australiano. Punts e bicycles fanno parte di tè. Cambridge, come thè Shakespeare festival nei giardini dei tuoi trentuno colleges, come i pubs e le sei Nadia's patisserie. La tua Graduation Ceremony in thè Senate-House è magica: attimi di tempo in cui si può avvertire sulla pelle il contatto con le nostre radici e con le nostre aspettative in una congiunzione "astrale" unica. Siamo stati profondamente colpiti dalla storia di un lungo indimenticabilmente poetico Thè Orchard-Grantchester, un angolo dell'Inghilterra dove una mattina di primavera del 1892 cominciò la grande tradizione: a Tea Garden meta, grazie al giovane Rupert Brooke, di visitatori e punto di riferimento per un circolo di amici, "Thè Grantchester Group" fu formato da E. We are getting closer and closer going together towards thè Orchard in Grantchester: thè meadows, thè blue sky, thè fieids, thè river, thè canoes punting, even thè air and thè sun are with us, sharing our joy. I like to touch thè leaves, to get in touch with thè trees "flying" to thè sky. I am discovering^another face of love, not passion, but something greater as if thè blood was running through thè veins giving new blossom to my life. We enjoyed seeing thè Shakespeare festival: Thè Comedy of Errors at Emmanuel College. And afterwards we took pleasure in sipping enormous cups of coffee in thè "Dome". It was brilliant walking up Castle Hill, thè most ancient monument in Cambridge, looking around thè folk museum, having thè honour of assisting a graduation ceremony. That was gorgeous. < May we go in?' ' Do you know anybody?' 1 must teli thè truth, I don't know anybody!' 'How many ofyou are there?' Three' You may come in!' Fashionable people are sitting on thè right and on thè left of thè huge room. I wouid like to remember every part of this room but I can't. l'm literally captured by thè red-dressed woman and by thè bachelors who are wearing academic robes with differently-coloured hoods.. Each of them is kneeling in front of this woman. Thè hand are in thè position of a prayer: thè woman is holding thè student's hands. It's a unique ceremony: during it thè past is connected with thè future through thè present. We are feeling our roots, your personal and cultura! roots that give security for a future career. They speak with their lips almost closed so it's difficult to understand them. They have gorgeous gardens with marvellous flowers. Their parks are thè greenest. It seems they have an industry of grass. They dedicate weekends to gardening and shopping. Most of them are so kind and helpful. Their telephone boxes are red and their pillar boxes are also red. than cars. They go punting on thè river Cam (a long wooden pole is stuck on thè bottom of thè river to go on). They like to queue everywhere. They have a 'flying apostrophe'. In everything there is a balance between two different forces: in thè buildings a balance between^ thè embroidery and thè massive walis, in punting there is a balance between thè strength and thè stream-lined figure of thè punters.. ^ |

Report by Carmelina Rotundo We are thè pioneers of this kind of independent teachers' course. Sf Practical informdtion: Where am I? ^ Type of course/ accommodation/ meais Who is on thè course? (How many of us are there? Where are we from?) Who is holding thè course? I am in Cambridge with Beli Language Schoois from 16^ July until 29^ July 2000. Title of course: Language development and methodology/COP 2 Thè accommodation is wonderful. We are eleven teachers from ali over thè worid. Head of Beli Teacher Training: Rosemary Wilson Tutors: Eryl Griffiths and Katie Head Tuition hours per week: 15 AJMS: improving our knowledge of English vocabulary: intonation, rhythm, idioms, phrasalverbs ..... Improving our knowledge of using new techniques: media/multimedia aids Pulì immersion in thè cultural life of Cambridge. Knowledge of thè English education system. Sharing ideas about our own education system (we are 11 from different countries: Portugal, Russia, Hungary, Guadeloupe, Poland, Holland, South Korea, Argentina, Italy) and our tutors are from different places in Britain, England and Wales, and their professional preparation is high but also highiy involved with human contact (I have aiways thought that for a teacher it is important to be clever but also at thè same time to be communicative and flexible). So they are wonderful for me. Thè atmosphere, here in Cambridge, is able to satisfy our passion to improve ones English studies and to increase thè motivation. Really I am in thè right piace with thè right people: teachers and course participants with thè 'right' weather for 10 days. Thè sun is shining and thè temperature is warm. Accommodation: we are staying in thè students' rooms in Fitzwilliam Street near Peterhouse College in Centrai Cambridge. There is a plaque because Charles Darwin lived here 1866 to 1867. Thè room: it is spacious, well-lit, well furnished to study, clean. We are quite dose to thè college where we are studying, I feel comfortable, I enjoy it. Meais are generally at thè University Centre, breakfast sometimes at little cafès or Nadia's patisserie. |
