davanti a me.
Pizzette piccole come baci,
melanzane e polpettine vegetariane danzano nell'olio,
l'acquolina in bocca.
principe dell'accoglienza.
Creature
Title: A Place of Wonder
When Life Continues to Amaze You
FERRAGOSTO 2023
A transparent glass cup holds a fairy-tale-like barley
coffee with orange zest. It's Angelo and I, seated at a
solid oak wooden table. I find solace in caressing its
natural veins, which seem to narrate the stories
of the trees they once were.
The veranda boasts an exquisite roof made
of slender reeds, uniting wooden panels from
which glass bottles hang, containing lights t
hat dance playfully. Gazing beyond the glass,
pots overflow with geraniums and peonies.
Our surroundings embrace a landscape where tree
canopies stretch towards a clear, uniform sky,
accompanied by gentle breezes that carry away worries
and troubles. An antique sideboard stands to my right,
meticulously arranged with salt and pepper shakers,
a glass pepper mill – a reflection of the harmony
of welcoming comfort.
Lucia, with her regal demeanor, is Angelo's wife.
She attends to every customer on this Ferragosto
day with the utmost kindness. I'm grateful for her
hospitality, longing to be of help, yet recognizing
the sacredness of the guest here.
Underneath me, a warm sea of terracotta tiles extends,
the unique warmth of Impruneta's land. Where t
he terracotta ends, stone paving begins, embracing
the beautiful park. Each plant whispers stories
of Angelo's tender care. Lemons, olives, bananas,
figs, legendary bonsai trees, jasmine, laurels –
all flourish in this idyllic haven. A multi-tiered white
fountain adorns the scene, housing red goldfish
that glide gracefully. The voices and silences
of this resilient, untouched nature surround us.
Ornate clay jars, some small, some grand,
pepper the landscape. Many roses – yellow,
pink, fiery red passion, and stunning white ones –
weave through arches, creating fragrant passages.
The sun-drenched pool animates the park, between
the verdant expanse and the veranda.
The fryer sizzles as it prepares
petite delights. Mini-pizzas akin to kisses,
drenched in San Marzano tomato sauce,
vegetarian meatballs, eggplants –
all brought to life by Vittorio Celentano,
the most accomplished chef in the county.
Each dish becomes an attraction, a canvas of colors,
an artist's palette. Arcimboldo, the creator o
f exquisite art, might have marveled at such
creations, both visual delights and culinary marvels.
(Even the pasta is unique, produced in the on-site
laboratory.)
Amidst lunch, conversations flow smoothly,
weaving through voyages to distant lands.
From the banks of the Ganges in India to the
shores of the Nile, from Umbria to Calabria –
stories intertwined with the specialties of each place.
Soppressata, cheeses, and discussions span the
diverse culinary landscape of Italy. Personal stories
blend with dedication and commitment, turning each
endeavor into a masterpiece. Angelo, with his prize
for selling encyclopedias in hand, my brother Cesare,
who lived through a history so horrific.
Time passes imperceptibly, gently.
Oh, the pool! How refreshing it would be to take a dip
in its elegant waters.
As I depart this oasis of paradise, thoughts turn to
Athena, Federico's little daughter, whose name
conjures myth and history. With Angelo by my side,
a true gentleman and an embodiment of hospitality,
I recall the terracotta lion, the guardian
of this establishment, waiting to welcome guests.
Guarding treasures that Mother Nature bestows upon us all.
Trees, nearly towering, offer shelter to the little birds.
They bloom, bear fruit, and provide shade and rest.
As they sway to the rhythm of the seasons,
they embrace the gentle patter of raindrops,
the ferocity of storms. They feel the caress of
the radiant sun, their leaves turning vibrant green.
They stand as miracles, reaching towards the sky
painted in shades of turquoise, cotton candy clouds
passing by. At dawn and dusk, the sky turns red,
casting a surreal glow. The leaves, I touch them.
It's as though I've known them forever.
Beings with their crowns in the sky and roots in the earth,
their trunks pulse with life-giving sap,
they are the trees in God's vast, eternal garden.
A dedication to Angelo and Lucia, and the entire staff, each contributing their utmost to the warmth of hospitality. The Vill
a Cesi project doesn't stop here; a children's playground I
s in the works, and forest trails await exploration.
For someone who pre-booked the Ferragosto lunch,
when asked about their experience, the immediate,
heartfelt response was: "Wonderful!"
All that's left is for you to experience it yourself.
